Invasion Of The Canal Geese

More views of the canals

You might remember that Beavers attacked the flowering trees along the lower canal last May.

It looks like the canal beavers have moved on, and in true Holyoke fashion, a new culture has taken their place.

This gaggle of Canadian Geese, numbering about 15, really surprised me when I went looking for the beavers.

Their threatening posture was a warning that they will not tolerant any tomfoolery, or maybe they just expected me to feed them, I'm not sure.

You never know what you're going to find in this town. Just take a walk around. The hidden corners of Holyoke are filled with the damnedest things. Too bad the weather didn't cooperate with me today.

Yet More Storms And Damage

Listening to the scanner. Sounds like an awful mess near the mountain, and Rock Valley. Tress, and power lines down all over the place.

If anyone has any pictures, or stories they would like to share I am happy to post it here in the blog. Just email me your pics with a description and location. dogvan@gmail.com

3:00AM Dwight Street Fire

One of the nice Victorian houses on upper Dwight by Holy Cross was struck by lightning and caught fire just after 3:00AM. The fire consumed the upper section of the tower, and was spreading into the attic. The house suffered serious damage before the fire department was able to get it under control.

I couldn't help but notice a woman standing with an umbrella in her nightgown, watching her hard earned equity go up in smoke. I felt like giving her a hug, but I was soaking wet.

Blogger Backlash

Seems that I am not the only valley blogger with an issue about the bad reporting coming from the Republican Newspaper.

Michaelann recently posted a story questioning Stephanie Barry's sources on a story about the Open Pantry. Michaelann, who has first hand knowledge of the topic, almost jokingly asks if the "detractors" mentioned in Barry's article are "anonymous posters on MassLive?"

I actually got an all-knowing smirk on my face while reading Michaelann's post. It's similarity to the post that launched my blog really got my attention. In my post I blasted Republican reporter Ken Ross's one sided slant on the transfer station hearing. Coincidentally, the same day as Michaelann posted her story, Mike Franco criticized Ross's reporting of Franco's jury duty trial. In reference to the Republican's coverage he said, "The facts are so seriously skewed and inaccurate that I will not bother to take the time to address the problem areas going forward.”

All of this raises the question of what is journalistic integrity, and are bloggers reporters too?

With in this discussion there is an interesting side note. Take a look at Bill Dusty's newest site, Pioneer Valley Central. It's an aggregated blog site containing post from several popular valley blogs. They exclude the personal stuff, and submit the stories with a valley wide appeal. It sounds almost journalistic.

The Rise and Fall of Eyrie House

Kudos to Pine Cone Johnny for posting an interesting time line story on the rise and fall of Eyrie House.

Blinking Lightning

I can't get any work done online, my DSL keeps blinking out with the lightning. Maybe I will get some work done tomorrow, if we all don't float away.

Smoke In The Flatts

The large mill building at 37 Appleton Street suffered a small fire tonight at sunset. Smoke was coming out the roof, but no fire could be seen. American Dream Modular Homes occupies the old mill.

The same thing happen about ten years ago. That time the whole of the Flatts filled with smoke.

66 Years

1941 - 2008

I found the 1941 photograph in this post and immediatly recognized it as one of the hadley mills townhouses in the Flatts. It was the only picture in the series I could easily re-shoot. I tried a few other locations but found them technically impossible. Trees, bushes, fence in the way.

Lane's Brownstone Quarry

Hidden the woods past Ashley Ponds, and just over the border in Westspringfield is the old Lane Brownstone Quarry. I don't have much historical information about it, but this is one of the places much of the brownstone you see in Holyoke's old buildings came from.

The trail into the quarry is well traveled. Looks like the work of dirt bikes, and quads.

Along the trail I quickly snapped a picture of this familiar native plant. I can't for the life of me remember it's name, but even as a kid I appreciated their deathly beauty.

The quarry can be hard to find if you've never been there before. The bike trails circle around it, and the site is totally overgrown. After more than 100 years of abandonment trees and bushes have rooted in the cracks of the bedrock. It never ceases to amaze me how fast mother nature will take back what was originally hers.

This is where the quarrying stopped. You can see the thick layer of brownstone they were after. Above and below are thinner sandstone layers, all laid down about 200 million years ago when the whole valley was a vast flood plain.

The stone used to build the retaining dam at Whitting Street reservoir supposedly came from this quarry, and those stones contain dinosaur tracks.

Hmm.. is that a dinosaur track?

Paleontologists would have a field day going through all these stone layers, but the site is now protected under Westspringfield's watershed zone. The town has been hostile to people even going in there, despite the fact its private property.

Question Time For Governor Patrick

As I expected the Governor's town meeting didn't last long. Only one hour, and maybe about 15 questions were asked. None of the questions were very hard hitting.

Where's Waldo?

The meeting was more of a political love in with the crowd cheering the governors answers.

This guy asked one the more hard hitting questions about why he could only get one veterans licenses plates, and not two.

The Governor's staff were all over this guy afterwards, promising to do anything they could to solve this vexing problem.

After the meeting people mobbed the governor trying to get their issues heard, or just have his Excellency's ear.

The political smoozing continued for some time after the meeting. It is unfortunate our state has become so one partied. With no really hard questions being asked, what's the incentive for our politicians to perform as promised?

Parsons Site Update

National Vulcanized Fiber was given until last Friday, 7/11/08, to have a plan in place to deal with the remainder of the Mill. The mayor has said that he wants to see a fence around the site first thing.

Last week I noticed there was a security guard patrolling the site.

Today workers were putting up that fence.

The Republican reports that National Vulcanized Fiber has paid the city $10K the cost of demolishing potions of the mill after the fire.

What's NOT Wrong With Comcast?

In 1996 the telecom industry was deregulated by the Fed. A year later 3000 Holyokers signed a petition to keep EWTN available in the basic Comcast cable package. In the eleven years since, the cost of that package has gone up over 77%, more than double the rate of inflation.

Despite making plenty of noise about improving customer service, the latest American Consumer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), says customer service from Comcast is actually getting worse.

The InterWebiTubes are filled with angry websites, and stories about Comcast's problems.
  • A YouTube video of a Comcast technician caught sleeping on a customer's couch as he waited more than an hour for his office to verify the installation was very popular

Comcast claims all this is simply an issue with the media, perception, or Comcast's subcontractors. Recently they set up teams of employees who click around social networks or online forums in an effort to reduce the number of these stories coming out. I actually had a hard time compiling the list above because all the original links I saved over the past few years no longer worked. Especially the more spectacular, Comcast Blows Up House, and Murder, which disappeared from the Chicago Tribunes web site like a South American political prisoner.

Is There Any Live Music In Holyoke?

grüvr.com

Grüvr is an interactive map that lets bands and their fans find each other geographically.

Bands put grüvr tour maps on their profiles to let fans track them on their 'radar'. Fans can share band maps, monitor artist schedules, get alerts when the band plays locally, and get email reminders a day before the show.

You Know You've Grown Up When..

1. Your houseplants are alive, and you can’t smoke any of them.

2. Having sex in a twin bed is out of the question.

3. You keep more food than beer in the fridge.

4. 6:00 AM is when you get up, not when you go to bed.

5. You hear your favorite song in an elevator.

6. You watch the Weather Channel.

7. Your friends marry and divorce instead of “hook up” and “breakup.”

8. You go from 130 days of vacation time to 14.

9. Jeans and a sweater no longer qualify as “dressed up.”

10. You’re the one calling the police because those %&@# kids next door won’t turn down the stereo.

11. Older relatives feel comfortable telling sex jokes around you.

12. You don’t know what time Taco Bell closes anymore.

13. Your car insurance goes down and your car payments go up.

14. You feed your dog “Science Diet” instead of McDonald’s leftovers.

15. Sleeping on the couch makes your back hurt.

16. You take naps.

17. Dinner and a movie is the whole date instead of the beginning of one.

18. Eating a basket of chicken wings at three in the morning would severely upset, rather than settle, your stomach.

19. You go to the drug store for ibuprofen and antacid, not condoms and pregnancy tests.

20. A four dollar bottle of wine is no longer “pretty good shit.”

21. You actually eat breakfast food at breakfast time.

22. “I just can’t drink the way I used to” replaces “I’m never going to drink that much again.”

23. Ninety percent of the time you spend in front of a computer is for real work.

24. You drink at home to save money before going to a bar.

25. When you find out your friend is pregnant you congratulate them instead of asking “Oh shit what the hell happened?”

Bonus: You read this entire list looking desperately for one sign that it doesn’t apply to you and can’t find one to save your sorry old ass.

Victory - Do or Die

I just got back from a meeting with Donald Sanders, Executive Director of MIFA. The purpose of the meeting was to figure out if Don's plan for the revival of the Victory is really workable. Please, don't ask me to explain the plan. I will leave that up to Don.

My opinion is that his plan is workable. No Really! I think this can happen!

The next step is to have a larger meeting with every one necessary to make the plan happen, and get it done.

Wish me luck!

Governor - Double Books - Holyoke Town Hall Meeting

Gov Patrick will hold a town hall meeting in Holyoke on July 17th, 6pm at Heritage State Park. I noticed he has also scheduled a full cabinet town hall meeting in Amherst on the same day. The only occasion, so far, that he scheduled 2 meeting on the same day.

I will be surprised if they don't cut short the Holyoke meeting by scheduling the Amherst meeting too close. Since the Amherst meeting is a full cabinet town hall meeting, it is more important, and will take precedent over Holyoke. I can just hear the excuses: We only have so much time for questions, so please make it brief, sorry we can't take any more questions, Thank You, Goodbye!

Connecticut River Railroad Station

Built in 1883, the Connecticut River Railroad Station was designed by well known American architect Henry Hobson Richardson.

This little architectural gem of Holyoke has been neglected in recent years, and is in danger of meeting a wrecking ball unless someone comes forward to restore it soon.

Great picture I took showing the stations relation to the north main street area.

entire picture set here.
