I didn't bother to take my camera since I was in a rush, but once freed from my postal obligation I found myself in the downtown, and remembered my cellphone is also a camera.

Curious about the back alley side of the Victory Theatre, I went exploring.

The only incident I had in the downtown, if you can call it that, was this blond haired woman who asked if I had 25 cents for a phone call. I shook my head no, with a disgruntled look. She walked away saying, "I didn't think so you fucking asshole!".

I crossed the street to take a picture of the alley, and the BlondHo turned around, and walked back down the sidewalk like she owned it.

The downtown has quite a few empty storefronts. Too bad speculators have priced out many lower end entrepreneurs who would love to get ahold of these spaces.

The sun was going down, and stores closing up for the day.

But there were still a few people around, mostly heading home at this hour. I headed home down Dwight St.

Of coarse the sun would come out making beautiful light when I don't have my good camera.

Sometimes mistake photos look interesting too.

I began to take this camera phone thing as a challenge.

Experimenting to see what it can do.

Almost home, I tried to get some good shots of the old RR station.

The urban landscape. No! I don't live there..

hmmm.. How creative.

So I did make it home. No stab wounds, or gun shot holes. Maybe I'll walk to PO from now on.

I never underestimate a camera phone. And you were right about the sun coming out. I was a little peeved that I got to Heritage after the sun started to go past the buildings and gave me flat lighting.
Always amazes me how much potential downtown Holyoke has. The downtown is simply built for commerce. So many possibilities; it's almost depressing to see it (and Springfield) in their present state. I hope I'm still around to see the rebirth...
"DownHo" made me chuckle. I love Holyoke, warts and all.
Good to see you are changing your attitude and realizing there's nothing dangerous about walking through downtown Holyoke in broad daylight. This attitude is part of the reason Holyoke is so segregated.
WTF? My camera phone apparently sucks lol. But it's handy.. I think I might need to upgrade my phone. These pics looked as good as anything from my digital camera. Can i ask what kind of phone you have?
Apple iPhone, with 2 megapixal camera indside. Most new cell phones have 2 megs, and they do better in low light than my old 2 meg point and shoot.
The challenging thing is holding it still and pressing the picture button at the same time. A lot of shots came out blurred.
Ah, the walk through Holyoke. The five coolest buildings in Springfield combined are not as cool as the coolest buildings in Holyoke.
How the math works regarding that statement, I'm not sure.
It is true that just by walking around you improve your chances of experiencing something freaky. We walked home the other night and this guy told us to "put the lady on the inside as she is not for sale". I was walking on the outer edge of the three of us. Earlier that day, I heard someone heading into One Plop Liquors saying, "I gotta go back on crack, these cigarettes are too expensive".
For the record, I haven't seen that woman actively ho-ing. I have seen her (or someone who looks similar)around...usually with her kids.

What...you didn't know? She DOES own that street.
bill, i feel strongly for the potential and beauty of holyoke, but i'd say you might want take a second-look at springfield's architecture. look at springfield: court square is gorgeous, kimbell towers, masonic lodge, union station, the worthy, mattoon st rowhouses, state building, symphony hall, etc.
holyoke has more welcoming and charming buildings but i think springfield has more impressive architecture on a case-by-case.
