I had no idea it was from the Mountain Park. I just assumed that it had been built in Holyoke, but that really doesn't make much sense thinking about it.
I was in seventh grade the year they brought it down to Heritage, I remember collecting money at school in Jimmy Fund like cans to help fund the move. But by the time it was finally moved I was too old and too cool to care. Sigh. I am glad at least to have so many rich memories of riding it back at Mt Park!
Wait.. It was moved in 1993.. I was finishing high school by then, but I helped raise the funds in the seventh grade.. Wow, I had forgotten how many years it took for all that to actually happen.
I rode it at Mountain Park too, but was more interested in the bumper cars at the time.
I rode it plenty of times up at the 'Park' even tried to grab the brass ring a few times. If memory serves me correct, the valuation at the time for each carved horse was around $100k each.
Im almost positive I have the last photo of the old Merry go round building up at mountain park. It burned down a few days after i took the photo.
you can have a look at Jay Ducharme's book called "Mountain Park" here:http://www.arcadiapublishing.com/or check your local library.
