How Much Rain?

We had so much rain last night that the city's drainage system couldn't handle it all. It's caused street flooding all over town as the drains backed up. Perhaps as much as 5 inches fell in parts of Holyoke.

The water has undermined a section of road on Hillside near Ridgewood causing a sinkhole. Water from Hillside ran down Ridgewood to Northampton Street and turned the street into a small river.

On my way back home I encountered two car accidents on High St. One at Cabot and High, and the other at Dwight and High.

Around 2:00AM I went back out, headed up Ridgewood St to investigate what I am hearing over the police scanner.

I talked to some of the residents up there, and they said water has run down the street before, but never this bad. Suffice to say, they are not happy about a river running through their yards. On a lighter note, they don't have to worry about trash pickup tomorrow morning, the flood washed all their trash off the sidewalks, down to Northampton Street, and down Beech Street, towards MacKenzie Field. The morning commuters are probably going to wonder why trash is strewn up and down Rt 5, and Rt 202.

When I came back down Ridgewood street the DPW was already cleaning up the debris I just filmed a few minutes earlier.

I think we need more paved lots around here, so that when it rains we can turn the city into a water park. It could be a big draw for kids in the 'burbs.

Maybe it is just me who thinks that increased paved areas exacerbate flash flooding!
